Thought of The Day: Picking Seats In School

With the spring semester of my junior year underway I'm once again subjected to picking my seat for the semester and seeing who's brave enough to sit next to me. I'm joking of course because I'm nothing but polite to my classmates, at least in an academic setting, as long as they return the favor.

As I sat in the library on Tuesday, sipping my grande hot chocolate from Starbucks and playing my Grooveshark playlist, I thought back on my first two classes and realized there's a trend in how we pick seats. First, as students we tend to leave a sit between us and the other people around us if we're strangers. I don't know what it is about that extra seat in between us that gives us comfort. We even do it in the movie theater unless there's no other choice.

I had one classmate deviate from this trend yesterday. She sat down in the seat right next to me. So, in turn I did my typical test to see what type of person I'd be next to for the next few months. I greeted her. She gave a quiet, yet polite 'hi' in return. I was satisfied.

I also noticed that when a student first walks in they scan the room. This technique is used to look for anyone you know and people you're not fond of and want to avoid. Thankfully, there was no one of that latter category in my classes so far.

Another trend is the class where you realize you know one person and thankfully you like that person. You let the whole class know by smiling brightly and immediately heading in their direction and giving an enthusiastic greeting.

This greeting is something along the lines of, "Hey _____, I'm so glad I know someone in this class" or "I didn't know you were in this class! How was your break?" I had this experience this morning with a past classmate of mine.

Am I the only one who gets a moment of self-questioning when nobody sits next to you? The inner monologue  begin. Do I look weird? Do I look mean? I'm nice, I swear! Someone sit by me. No not you!

How do you pick you seat?

Thought of the Day

Hello lovely people! I hope you all had a good, non-stressful weekend and Monday. The inspiration for my thought of the day came from some comments I saw on Instagram the other day. I came across a Justin Bieber fan ,or Belieber as they call themselves, who was advocating for fans to rally together and use the hashtag JusticeforJustin.

Bieber was in the news this week for his involvement in the egging of his neighbors house. Authorities showed up and found drugs on the premises which resulted in the arrest of 20 year-old rapper Lil Za. His real name is Xavier Smith.

My whole issue with some of his fans is that they seem to be blindly following and supporting Bieber. No matter what he does and all the actions that have landed him in the news he's still their idol. And yes, to some point it shows loyalty but the group think mentality of "Bieber can do no wrong" or the idea that other people are making him look bad is ridiculous.

These young girls at some point have to realize that he is behaving in a way that should not be idolized or accepted. As his fans they should want him to get his act together instead of jumping to conclusions.

Bieber does a good enough job by himself, without the police allegedly damaging his reputation. I'm not saying the police were correct in storming his house for an egg throwing incident, but it was crime that needed to be investigated. It probably shouldn't have warranted a huge force with weapons and such, but that's another issue.

OOTD: Rainy Day

Hey guys! The weather in my neck of the woods isn't too pretty. It's been a rainy and chilly day here in the DMV. That's why I'm stuck inside, my friends basement to be exact. Anyways, check out my outfit for today.

Song of the Week

The song I choose as my favorite of this week is The Worst by Jhené Aiko. This week every time I was in the car this song came on. Jhené's voice has this light airy feel that makes her songs mesmerizing. The chorus of this song has been on a loop in my head. The beat is simple and smooth. I started following her on Instagram recently and I will admit that she is so pretty has the most adorable daughter. Aiko is on the list of artist to preform in April at Coachella. It would be awesome to go and see her along with others like Outkast, Muse, City and Colour, and Zedd. Unfortunately, tickets are sold out already. For more of Jhené check out her EP Sail Out. She's also featured on the song Beware with Big Sean. Check out the video for The Worst below.

Thought of The Day

"Is that the look now?" Over the course of my winter break my mom has asked me countless times about my outfit choices. Today, as she asked me I really thought about. Is what I'm wearing the look? Am I keeping up with style trends that I see in magazines and all over other blogs? And my honest answer was probably not. As much as I love fashion and looking at what the trends are I've never based my wardrobe or an entire outfit after them. When I shop I look for pieces that I like or think look cool. Partially, that is buying into the trends because store will sell what's hot to make a profit. The only place you would find something that's not "in" would be the thrift store, which I love to visit every now and then. I can't say I'm not inspired by images I've seen. All I can say is in the future if my finances permit it I may purchase some big name style pieces but for now I'm working with what I got. Whether or not my looks are "the" looks won't be a priority.

Thought of the Day

I'm sure some of you go to church, whether it's on a regular basis, or just on holidays. This thought popped into my head yesterday as I dragged myself out of bed to get dressed for church bright and early.

I was beyond tired, and that's my own fault for staying up so late but oh well. Anyways, as I looked through my closet I thought to myself, "I wish I could just go to church in my sweatpants and be comfortable."

A common phrase among many churches is, "Come as you are." I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it wrong but shouldn't that mean I can come to church in nice comfty clothes and not be judged. I'm sure God doesn't care if I'm in sweats, as long as I'm there to hear his word and worship.

In my mind I think we dress up for other people. We don't want to be judged by those around us even though we go to church to focus on God. But that's just human nature, to worry what others think. And I'm not saying I'm not guilty of it too. Just thinking how different things could be if we didn't feel the need to dress or look a certain way.

A house of worship is a sacred place, so I guess it should be expected of you to dress up and look your best. No sweatpants for me. When they say come as you are, they mean come at your best appearance wise, but bring yourself even in the midst of emotional trouble.

Happy 2014!
