Thought of the Day: #TheBlackOut

Hello loves,

Happy Friday and happy Black Out Day to everyone participating in the social media phenomena that has landed #TheBlackOut and #BlackOutDay in the trending topics on both Twitter and Tumblr. Today, my timeline has been flooded with beautiful selfies and heartfelt messages of love and support from people all over the world. I'm not sure where the idea for this event originated but I'm glad it did. I've gotten so much love on my own photos and it's a good feeling. So many times, people get overlooked but today I feel like everyone is there for everyone. Hopefully this lasts and can be a reoccurring event.

The sad thing is that while there is so much positive energy and love, there is also anger, ignorance, and hate. Some people thought it was a good idea to start a counteractive hashtag called #whiteout. Others are adding hateful comments to people's selfies. My question to those are: Why are you so threatened by the idea of black people supporting one another? How does me posting a selfie affect your life? Why are you full of such hate? In my mind, the idea of hating people with such intensity sounds tiring. I have so many other things in my life to focus my energy on.

I don't have the answers for everything and thankfully I don't need to. I'm grateful for my faith for reassuring me that those who speak evil, who actively and purposely try to damage others will see the ramifications of their actions one day. Whether it be in this life or the next, they will see.

So, enough with the heavy! Go out and reblog and take some beautiful selfies. Visit me on tumblr @karebearkhaos and let me know if you want me to reblog your stuff.

Song of the Week

This week my pick is Don't Kill the Fun by Sevyn Streeter feat. Chris Brown. The songwriter turned artist continues to release music that I love to put on repeat. The R&B song has an interesting mix of samples and break downs that make me want to roll down my windows and blast it.  My favorite line comes in the chorus. The lyric says, "Let's be undeniable." I will admit when the song first came out I wasn't in love with it, but on my second and third listens I found myself bobbing my head a bit. Now, I can't stop singing it.

There was a bit of confusion when the song came out because Sevyn had not officially released it yet, but some radio stations were already playing it. Sevyn soon took to twitter and posted the version that was meant to be released. I couldn't even tell the difference between the two versions.

Despite the mix up, I think the song is doing pretty good. If you learn one thing about me it's that I'm a major fangirl for certain people. So, I got pretty hyped when Sevyn replied to my tweet after I mentioned the song. Imagine me texting my friends like "OH MY GOD SHE REPLIED!" It was ridiculous. Strangely, Lupe Fiasco retweeted my brother that same week.

Anyways, remember that Chris Brown and Sevyn also collaborated on It Won't Stop so I'm sure they know their way around each other in the studio. It probably doesn't hurt that they're also good friends.

I think this one will be another hit for the pair. Sevyn was a writer on Chris' songs Fine China, Next You, and Strip. She's also credited with writing or at least co-writing The Way, performed by Ariana Grande and New Day, performed by Alicia Keys. I'm excited to see what the rest of Sevyn's album sounds like.Check out the video for Don't Kill the Fun below.

Better Late Than Never

Hello loves! It's well into the new year and I'm finally back. I didn't think my last semester of college would keep me so busy, especially since I was under the assumption that my classes were going to be more fun than work. I can say the only class that meets that criteria is my Mass Media and Society class. It's entertaining and interesting to watch movies, television shows, advertisements, and listen to music and analyze the messages they send to their audiences and how it can impact people. No, papers aren't fun but the ones I've been writing for this class are a lot less stressful than campaign proposals and research papers.

In 2015, I want to dedicate more time to my writing and really shaping this blog around what my peers want to see and talk about. With that said, I will be reaching out on my various social media accounts to get feedback on what content I will be posting. That doesn't mean that everything I talk about will be the most popular stuff. I will still talk about my favorite shows and my life. So be on the look out within the next week or so for new content, and maybe even sooner if I practice those time management skills that teachers try to drill into your head.

Have a good week everyone and leave comments if you want me to talk or feature something specifically.
