Life, updates, and the new year

Hey guys and gals,

I hope you're keeping warm in this biting weather. I didn't even want to go outside to go to class today. Crazy thing is I saw a guy in shorts yesterday. I wanted to follow up with you all and let you know what's going on.

As of right now, I'm still in the planning and construction stage for this blog. I have a lot of ideas and topics that I want to write about and look forward to sharing it with you all and hearing back from you. I'm really looking to get real conversations about real things started here. I love talking to people and hope that this will be an outlet where people can talk freely. That doesn't mean I'll let people trash others and be insensitive.

I'm almost done the first semester of my senior year and I've been doing a lot of writing for my creative writing minor. That means that my time and ability to write creatively for other outlets has been none existent. I've also started a story that I plan to develop into a full length novel, so there's that too.

My aim is to be back and giving you all my opinions and other content in the new year. I will be on Winter break and feel that this realistically gives me time to complete all the design elements that I have in mind and nail down exactly how to make my vision for this blog concrete.

I hope you all continue to stay on the ride with me. Until then, follow me on Twitter; @kiramira_ for my personal tweets on pop culture, and my every day life and thoughts, and or @kiramccallPR_AD for tweets that are tailored towards news, public relations, advertising, and my journey as a developing young professional.

Updates!

Hey everyone! My summer is almost over and I have few updates to share with you. First of all I'm currently in the process of revamping this blog so things might look a bit different very soon and some pages might be blank as I reformat and develop things. I really just want this blog to look more put together. My goal is to start posting more content on a regular basis and begin to really shape myself as a blogger and a writer. I'm getting ready for my senior year of college so this is one of the things I will be focusing on this year.

Content-wise, I've already been brainstorming some of things I'll be doing. I want to continue doing my Thought of the Day post, obviously on a more regular basis. I also want to continue doing Song of the Week since music really helps me get through my week. Some new things will be K's Corner, where I'll talk about current trends, events, review movies, and my favorite TV shows. Hopefully  I'll have some guest posts from some of my friends who have their own things going for them and plenty of things to talk about from makeup, movies, to life as an intern, and so much more. I also want to highlight some other bloggers and a few pins of their pins that I come across on Pinterest. I'm the queen of pining recipes and DIYs and never doing them. So one challenge for myself is to use those awesome ideas and share the results.

I can't wait for this next step and I hope you will all stick around for it!

Hey TV lovers, Emmy Nominations Are In!

It's that time of year again TV lovers. The nominations for the 2014 Emmy's have been revealed. I may not watch a lot of the shows that were nominated due personal preference and lack of time, but I am happy to see that one of my favorite series, Sherlock, got a few nominations.

The show received a nomination for Outstanding TV Movie for the episode "His Last Vow", which is the
Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbath as John Watson and Sherlock Holmes

finale episode of season 3.

The talented and versatile Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the series title character Sherlock Holmes, got a nomination for Best Actor-TV Movie/Miniseries for the same episode. Benedict been quite busy the last year with performances in a few feature length films including Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Fifth Estate, The Hobbit:Desolation of Smaug, 12 Years a Slave, and August: Osage County.

His partner in crime, Martin Freeman, who plays Doctor John Watson, got a nomination as well for Best Supporting Actor- TV Movie/Miniseries and Best Actor for Fargo, which aired on FX. Like Cumberbatch, Freeman has been quite busy the last year with finishing up The Hobbit (he plays Bilbo Baggins), and starring in Fargo. He is currently playing Richard The Third on stage in the UK.

Steven Moffat and Nick Hurran got nominations for writing and directing. Although, the show is up against some awesome TV Movies and talents in everything from sound editing to costume, I'm hoping the Baker Street gang comes home with a win or two. Fingers crossed.

Among the other talented nominees we have the lovely Kerry Washington for Best Actress-Drama for
Kerry Washington at the 2014 Golden Globes
"Scandal" facing Claire Danes- "Homeland", Lizzy Caplan - "Masters of Sex", Michelle Dockery - "Downton Abbey", Julianna Marguilles - "The Good Wife", and Robin Wright - "House of Cards".

Bryan Cranston- "Breaking Bad" is going up against Jeff Daniels - "The Newsroom", Jon Hamm - "Mad Men", Woody Harrelson - "True Detective", Matthew McConaughey - "True Detective", Kevin Spacey- "House of Cards" for Best Actor- Drama.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of every show nominated! Good luck to you all.

Song of the Week

+
Howdy guys and gals. I've been slacking on posting since I'm settling into my summer class and staying on top of my work. For this week's pick I choose is Sing by Ed Sheeran.

I've been a fan of Sheeran's music since I first heard "A Team" and "Kiss Me". He makes everything sound effortless from his vocals to his guitar work. Those high notes, awesome. So far Ed has done an amazing job of creating songs that tell stories. I will admit when I heard a few of his songs for the first time I teared up just because of the subject matter of the song and the way he weaved them into his music. "Small Bump", which is on his album + (Plus), is one of those songs. Not every artist can do that with their music. "Sing" is the first single off his upcoming album X (Multiply), that's set to be released on June 23. The song was produced by Pharrell Williams so it has a funky vibe that I love because it just works for Ed. The single is also Ed's first song to be number one on the UK Top 40. You can check out his website here.

Check out the video for "Sing":

Bonus Song: Chandelier by Sia. Its popped up on my Pandora a few times this week and I've found myself singing along after a few listens. Sia's voice stands out from the pack.

Song of Week

Hey there everyone! If you're on the East Coast of the U.S. I hope all the rain this week didn't bum you out too much. If so, this week's song of the week might help put a little pep back in your step. My pick for this week is Birthday by Katy Perry.

The song is the latest single off the pop star's album Prism. The upbeat song has an 80's feel that I love. Madonna's influence definitely shines through. The feel of the song reminds me of Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) from Teenage Dream. It's fun and the catchy lyrics makes it easy to sing along. If you've seen any of my other picks you know that I love to dance too. I found this song on YouTube when Katy released the lyric video. The lyric video and official music video are nothing short of fun as Katy sticks to her interesting video themes, costumes, and fun ways of displaying lyrics. It's definitely worth a watch. Let me know what you think of the song and even the video.

Bonus Pick:
If you haven't already heard Ariana Grande's new single "Problem" featuring Iggy Azalea then I suggest you have a listen below. Especially if you're an Ariana fan.

Song of a The Week

Happy Monday everyone! My pick for song of the week is Stay With Me by Sam Smith.  If you haven't heard it take a listen below and even if you have, listen again because your ears need more awesomeness.

The first time I heard him sing was on Disclosure's song Latch. I was hooked on that song for a while. When I was on ITunes last week I saw his name again in the new releases and had to check his new album out. I listened to the preview for this song and feel in love.

The soulful song is built around Smith's smooth vocals that go from light and airy to heavy and full of soul. The addition of back up vocals create a beautiful song about wanting someone's company even though you know they don't love you. Sam's style reminds me of a mix of Adele and John Legend.

Sam also performed this song and Lay Me Down on the Jimmy Fallon show last week. Check out his performances here. If the rest of the album is as good as this song I will definitely by listening in.

Thought Of The Day: Oversharing on Social Media

Happy Friday everyone! My thought today has to deal with oversharing on social media.

This morning, I was on Instagram and I saw a student athlete from my school post a screenshot of a text message conversation between him and his mother. The conversation was about how she was short on rent and needed a little of extra money. He happily agreed to help her out. He's a very successful athlete with a very good chance of going pro, so I'm not surprised that he has the means to help her out. What annoyed me was that he felt the need to share this screenshot on Instagram. This just might be my opinion by I feel that things like this should be kept private. It's wonderful that he can provide for his mother and give back to her after she raised him but I don't think it's necessary to share the conversation for the digital world to see.

It felt like when a celebrity does something nice that seems genuine that just happens to be caught by the paparazzi or even posted on their social media page. No need to force the world to think you're an amazing person. Your actions and other post will do a good job of showing who you are as a person.

Going off on a side note, this applies to other relationships as well. Arguments online with significant others, friends, and even people you don't like do not look good. Handle problems privately. You look very immature posting hateful things about someone or going back and forth.

Now if you're having a debate, make sure it's healthy. We tend to shoot down people's opinions rather rudely. Just tell someone you disagree and tell them why. Don't resort to name calling. If they disrespect you be the better person. End the conversation or just don't stoop to their level.

This is important because employers are online now more than ever. You don't want to miss out on an amazing employment opportunity because you had an argument with your boyfriend's ex-girlfriend publically for all of Twitter to see.

Those are my thoughts for today. Have a great Friday everyone. Let me know what you think about the points I made. I would love to hear your opinions.

Song of the Week

This week's song is All of Me by John Legend. This song isn't new but it's been my favorite for a while now. I was stuck inside on a snow day yesterday and I just had to have my Pandora app open and playing music. All of Me came on multiple times and I didn't get tired of it. I've even declared that this will be my wedding song. Let's see what my future husband has to say about that.

The song is extremely romantically, especially because Legend wrote it for his wife Christine Teigen. The pair got married in September of 2013. Just like the rest of music the lyrics and the music flow and create R&B magic. Comment with your favorite John Legend song. Ordinary People anyone? Check out the video below.

Thought of The Day: Picking Seats In School

With the spring semester of my junior year underway I'm once again subjected to picking my seat for the semester and seeing who's brave enough to sit next to me. I'm joking of course because I'm nothing but polite to my classmates, at least in an academic setting, as long as they return the favor.

As I sat in the library on Tuesday, sipping my grande hot chocolate from Starbucks and playing my Grooveshark playlist, I thought back on my first two classes and realized there's a trend in how we pick seats. First, as students we tend to leave a sit between us and the other people around us if we're strangers. I don't know what it is about that extra seat in between us that gives us comfort. We even do it in the movie theater unless there's no other choice.

I had one classmate deviate from this trend yesterday. She sat down in the seat right next to me. So, in turn I did my typical test to see what type of person I'd be next to for the next few months. I greeted her. She gave a quiet, yet polite 'hi' in return. I was satisfied.

I also noticed that when a student first walks in they scan the room. This technique is used to look for anyone you know and people you're not fond of and want to avoid. Thankfully, there was no one of that latter category in my classes so far.

Another trend is the class where you realize you know one person and thankfully you like that person. You let the whole class know by smiling brightly and immediately heading in their direction and giving an enthusiastic greeting.

This greeting is something along the lines of, "Hey _____, I'm so glad I know someone in this class" or "I didn't know you were in this class! How was your break?" I had this experience this morning with a past classmate of mine.

Am I the only one who gets a moment of self-questioning when nobody sits next to you? The inner monologue  begin. Do I look weird? Do I look mean? I'm nice, I swear! Someone sit by me. No not you!

How do you pick you seat?

Thought of the Day

Hello lovely people! I hope you all had a good, non-stressful weekend and Monday. The inspiration for my thought of the day came from some comments I saw on Instagram the other day. I came across a Justin Bieber fan ,or Belieber as they call themselves, who was advocating for fans to rally together and use the hashtag JusticeforJustin.

Bieber was in the news this week for his involvement in the egging of his neighbors house. Authorities showed up and found drugs on the premises which resulted in the arrest of 20 year-old rapper Lil Za. His real name is Xavier Smith.

My whole issue with some of his fans is that they seem to be blindly following and supporting Bieber. No matter what he does and all the actions that have landed him in the news he's still their idol. And yes, to some point it shows loyalty but the group think mentality of "Bieber can do no wrong" or the idea that other people are making him look bad is ridiculous.

These young girls at some point have to realize that he is behaving in a way that should not be idolized or accepted. As his fans they should want him to get his act together instead of jumping to conclusions.

Bieber does a good enough job by himself, without the police allegedly damaging his reputation. I'm not saying the police were correct in storming his house for an egg throwing incident, but it was crime that needed to be investigated. It probably shouldn't have warranted a huge force with weapons and such, but that's another issue.

OOTD: Rainy Day

Hey guys! The weather in my neck of the woods isn't too pretty. It's been a rainy and chilly day here in the DMV. That's why I'm stuck inside, my friends basement to be exact. Anyways, check out my outfit for today.

Song of the Week

The song I choose as my favorite of this week is The Worst by Jhené Aiko. This week every time I was in the car this song came on. Jhené's voice has this light airy feel that makes her songs mesmerizing. The chorus of this song has been on a loop in my head. The beat is simple and smooth. I started following her on Instagram recently and I will admit that she is so pretty has the most adorable daughter. Aiko is on the list of artist to preform in April at Coachella. It would be awesome to go and see her along with others like Outkast, Muse, City and Colour, and Zedd. Unfortunately, tickets are sold out already. For more of Jhené check out her EP Sail Out. She's also featured on the song Beware with Big Sean. Check out the video for The Worst below.

Thought of The Day

"Is that the look now?" Over the course of my winter break my mom has asked me countless times about my outfit choices. Today, as she asked me I really thought about. Is what I'm wearing the look? Am I keeping up with style trends that I see in magazines and all over other blogs? And my honest answer was probably not. As much as I love fashion and looking at what the trends are I've never based my wardrobe or an entire outfit after them. When I shop I look for pieces that I like or think look cool. Partially, that is buying into the trends because store will sell what's hot to make a profit. The only place you would find something that's not "in" would be the thrift store, which I love to visit every now and then. I can't say I'm not inspired by images I've seen. All I can say is in the future if my finances permit it I may purchase some big name style pieces but for now I'm working with what I got. Whether or not my looks are "the" looks won't be a priority.

Thought of the Day

I'm sure some of you go to church, whether it's on a regular basis, or just on holidays. This thought popped into my head yesterday as I dragged myself out of bed to get dressed for church bright and early.

I was beyond tired, and that's my own fault for staying up so late but oh well. Anyways, as I looked through my closet I thought to myself, "I wish I could just go to church in my sweatpants and be comfortable."

A common phrase among many churches is, "Come as you are." I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it wrong but shouldn't that mean I can come to church in nice comfty clothes and not be judged. I'm sure God doesn't care if I'm in sweats, as long as I'm there to hear his word and worship.

In my mind I think we dress up for other people. We don't want to be judged by those around us even though we go to church to focus on God. But that's just human nature, to worry what others think. And I'm not saying I'm not guilty of it too. Just thinking how different things could be if we didn't feel the need to dress or look a certain way.

A house of worship is a sacred place, so I guess it should be expected of you to dress up and look your best. No sweatpants for me. When they say come as you are, they mean come at your best appearance wise, but bring yourself even in the midst of emotional trouble.

Happy 2014!

First of all I want to start out by saying Happy New Year to everyone! I hope this year you strive towards the dreams and goals you have. Don't give up or let limitations hold you back.
